TOL: Food Photos & Food as Art

Food photos…most of us bloggers are all about it! Who doesn’t love a perfectly crafted smoothie bowl photo every once and again? But seriously, some people just DO NOT get it!

Some people think it’s hilarious, weird, or annoying to take pictures of food. They wonder why anyone cares that I’m eating a stir fry again. To me the answer is simple…I think a beautiful plate of food is art!

Food, especially healthy colorful food is really beautiful and eye-catching. I think of that plate the same way someone would admire a beautiful painting or photograph of a landscape.

Next time you want to laugh at your friend or think they’re insane, take a moment to think of the food as a piece of art. You might change your mind! I hope to inspire people with my food pictures. Inspire them to:

  • See how easy it is to eat healthily
  • See how beautiful and delicious healthy food is
  • Create their own works of art according to their own tastes
  • See food in a different light…food is beautiful and brings people together

So…keep on snapping, foodies!

  1. I’ve been trying really hard to get better with my “food photography” <– not sure if you can even call it that, ha! and I think it's so fun! When I first started my blog, I was embarrassed to take pictures of my food, but now Alex will be like, oh did you take a picture of your dinner yet for the blog? Ha!!

  2. YES!! I love food photography and find such beauty in the colors, the textures and the patterns involved. I could probably do food photoshoots all day long – if I knew how to use my camera properly and adjust for the changing light that is! 😉

  3. Ummm… those muffins are definitely art – and now I’m hungry and I definitely wasn’t before reading this post, ha!

Great food – I completely agree with you. When you find a fantastic dish that both looks beautiful and is healthy/nutritious… that’s definitely an experience worth documenting. 🙂

    • Yes, I know that well haha. Luckily my husband works in film and understands the process of good lighting haha that saves me!

  4. I take pictures of my food… 🙂 I’m not good at it, but I love it. Sometimes though I just say, ‘I’m hungry. It doesn’t ‘look’ pretty but it tastes good.’ which is enough. 🙂 It’s amazing how lighting changes everything! Heading off to follow you on Instagram!

  5. I’m all about those gorgeous food photos 😉 I don’t take many pictures of my actual meals anymore, but I miss it! It was kind of a pain in the ass sometimes, but at least it encouraged me to put a little more effort into the presentation of my food which makes a huge difference in enjoyment levels!

  6. Ah this post is so needed! I really love food photography – creating a beautiful image of a meal makes me feel so fulfilled – yet I feel really embarrassed about it. I kind of hate taking pictures of my food in front of other people because I feel they will judge me. But if they could just read this post… Maybe they’d understand a bit more about how it IS a form of art!! The colours can just be so beautiful .
