TOL: Technology addiction, coffee dependence, & Food Shaming

Hello there. I don’t normally pop in on Thursdays, but decided that I wanted to join in on the Thinking Out Loud fun! For those unfamiliar, this is a blogger link up of random thoughts and stories. As always your random comments and questions are welcome in the comments below! So, let’s do some thinking out loud!

  • Technology addiction: We all have smart phones, we all struggle to put them down at some point in the day. Admittedly, I struggle with putting it down once I get home from work but do my best to silence it so that I won’t be distracted. When I was walking home from the train station today, I saw someone walk straight in to a pole while they were texting. Guys, look up every once in a while! Especially if you’re veering off the sidewalk toward the phone poles!
  • Coffee Dependence: I always have a cup of coffee in the morning and then try to switch over to herbal teas throughout the day so I don’t drink too much caffeine. However, I have found recently that I NEED  cup of coffee after my lunch break in order to stay away once I get home from work. An early morning wake up call every morning for work paired with a long work day, does not make for a good match. If I want to stay awake past 7:30pm, I need that afternoon cup…and I’ve been drinking it black! Guess I’m a real grown up now.

  • Can we talk about the people that make you feel bad about your food? I had a green juice as a mid-morning snack a couple of weeks ago and someone was just telling me how disgusting it looked while I was consuming it. Gee, thanks!

  • On the flip side to this, people who make you feel bad about your portions. I’m eating a huge salad and people make me feel like I’m eating a huge lard-filled dish with my bare hands. Like, I might as well be ripping in to an entire turkey leg Renaissance style. Don’t tell people their food and drink is disgusting while they’re eating and don’t comment on their portions..especially when it’s a freaking salad.

  1. Oh my family is big on telling me all about how “weird” my foods are. They say a lot of rude things at times, meaning them as jokes, but I just brush it off for the most part. The ones I don’t like are when they comment on how OFTEN I eat. Like who the frick are you to tell me if Im hungry or not? Im a grown woman! lol

  2. Don’t get me started on food shaming. Sorry that I’m not sorry that I love to eat healthy food and that I want to live an awesome life that will take me into old age with the people I love. Does that mean that I don’t gluttonize? Nope. But I’m sure you’ve probably had a carrot or two in your life as well. Don’t judge me and I won’t judge you!

  3. The struggle to put down the Ipod for me is real, but I don’t want it to be my master. It’s a good tool, but it’s also perfectly wonderful to put it down and come back to it later. I love how we can use these things to connect with others, and then put them away when we don’t need them. YES, no more food shaming or portion size shaming! Eat those big salads girl!

    • I’m trying to get there by putting it on do not disturb and putting it in the other room so I’m not tempted! I’m hoping to get that balance that you seem to have!

  4. Ahhh – I totally JUST had a conversation with my photographer about coffee dependence when I was heading to a photo shoot this morning. I was definitely addicted to coffee, then slowed it down a bit, then went cold turkey, changing 100% over to tea. One of the most difficult things I’ve done. Not saying it’s for everyone, but I’m an all or nothing girl… but now back to my tea, ha!

    • That’s awesome…I love tea as well but NEED the morning and afternoon cup (drinking it now) of coffee to get through the rest of my day! What’s your favorite kind of tea?

  5. Oh I’ve heard it all when it comes to food. Either what I’m eating is weird or I’m weird that I’m not eating what someone else is eating. Years of people scrutinizing my food but I’ve learned to deal with it and just eat what I want regardless of what others think. Or say 🙂

  6. Amen sister!!! Food shaming is SO dumb. I’m eating like a horse lately so I promise any large salad you have is probably an appetizer for me 😉 I find that people food shame when stuff isn’t uber super duper healthy. Like, everyone makes choices for what’s best for them! Back off!

  7. I never understood why people feel the need to comment on someone else’s food. Like… eat your stuff and leave me to my gloop! I get that everyone has an opinion, but geez. A little bit of internal moderation, people. And I’m with you on the technology. I grew up without social media or a phone, and I definitely miss those times. Seemed so much simpler.

      I miss the no smart phone days sometimes…I know I rely too much on it!

  8. I stopped having coffee a while ago and am now back to a “sometimes” routine. Though I think I’ve found that having decaf in the morning and then a cup after lunch works so much better for me. I don’t get a crazy buzz but it keeps me up a bit later so I can get things done – otherwise I am hands down asleep by 9.
    No one should make a comment about another’s food. Just – ever.

  9. Oh man, I’ve had that “you’re going to eat all that?” about a salad so many times. It used to bother me, but now just laugh! Filters don’t exist on some people.
    I 100% have a coffee dependence and I’m kind of okay with it. As long it doesn’t become an expensive habit, of course!

    • Yeah, I try to block it out but for some reason, I’ve been really annoyed about it lately! haha
      Definitely agree with you on the cost of the coffee habit–luckily my work provides free coffee!

  10. To those haters who judge, I say “just do you!” I definitely have to work on cutting out some technology, especially later in the day. I love my 2 cups of coffee in the am but I have to cut myself off before 11am.

  11. Answers to your questions: no, never, and all the time!! It’s really annoying when people make comments about healthy food I eat. I don’t comment on their UNhealthy food!! Also I usually have just a green tea in the morning and water the rest of the day. But if I need a pick me up (which has been daily lately) I use NUUN energy tablets. They go in my water and really work!!

  12. I can totally relate to the technology addiction. I’m so guilty of spending my “free time” scrolling through my social media feeds and before I know it, I’ve spent an hour on Twitter! I try and be more aware of my screen time and take breaks to read, exercise, or just chat with family members 🙂

    • So true–why does it have to be so tough?! Also, I have found that I don’t miss it when I’m on vacation or avoiding technology on purpose…so why does it have to be so hard to get there?!
